Cosmic jazz-funk

Nato il 28 Dicembre 1940 a Richmond, in Virginia, il pianista e tastierista afroamericano Lonnie Liston Smith (da non confondere con l'altro grandissimo e omonimo pianista jazz: Lonnie Smith) può essere considerato, al pari di artisti come Herbie Hancock, uno dei massimi pionieri del jazz funk, e tra i primi ad aver creduto nella fusione di stili ed esperienze cretive. Allievo di McCoy Tyner, negli anni Sessanta suona a fianco di mostri sacri del calibro di Pharoah Sanders, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Roland Kirk, Gato Barbieri.., ma è l'esperienza con Miles Davis, all'inzio degli anni Settanta, a spingerlo ad intraprendere, a partire dal 1973, una carriera solista e a formare con il fratello Donald  i ''Cosmic Echoes'' creando di fatto i primi prodromi della musica di fusione: un ispiratissimo mix di jazz, funk, soul e rock progressivo che racchiude in sè l'anima e la spiritualità di John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Yusef Lateef. Ma al di là di ogni possibile definizione (si scrisse di Liston Smith come di colui che aveva colmato il divario tra Coltrane e gli Earth, Wind & Fire), la sua è musica che trascende i generi e tutt'oggi resta un esempio di come sia possibile inventare nuove desinenze sonore e declinarle con urgenza espressiva che non paga pegno all'approssimazione. Un suono ispirato e affascinante che dilata gli spazi e amplia gli orizzonti. Un innovatore libero e coraggioso che ha trovato nei dischi incisi per la Flying Dutchman tra ’74 e il ’77 (''Astral Traveling'', ''Cosmic Funk'', ''Visions Of A New World'', ''Expansions'' e ''Reflections Of A Golden Dreams'') il periodo più  prolifico e significativi della sua carriera, peraltro magnificamente riassunto (a partire dal titolo) da una splendida antologia pubblicata quest'anno dalla BGP: ''Cosmic Funk & Spiritual Sounds: The Flying Dutchman Masters'' - [yuhuu!]. Nuove direzioni risplendono come la prima luce che scende. Space Is The Place! Da non perdere!
