Steellicidio (Speciale Steelpan)

L'universo delle steeldrum (o steelpan) è strettamente relazionato alla cultura caraibica, in particolare del carnevale e del calypso. Le prime pan vengono realizzate verso la fine degli anni '30 a Trinidad e Tobago quando, dopo l'abolizione delle tambour bamboo bands (tronconi di bambù usati come percussioni e battuti con violenza uno contro l'altro o sul terreno dai discendenti delle popolazioni di colore sottomesse in passato alla schiavitù), il carnevale rimane senza sezione ritmica. Tuttavia, in un paese dove la reinvenzione è globale e il riciclaggio prassi quotidina, il popolo trova il modo di mantenere gli antichi retaggi trasformando le tambou banboo bands in steeldrum bands e inizia a tenere il tempo battendo bottiglie e catene con cucchiai di metallo. Con incursioni nelle cucine e nelle discariche i musicisti collezionano una quantità formidabile di secchi, padelle per friggere e coperchi, formando così le prime orchestre steel (metallo). I panmen (uomini delle padelle) iniziano ad affinare la loro arte riuscendo a produrre combinazioni di suoni sempre più sottili e delicati.

I bidoni della spazzatura vengono sostituiti a partire dal 1937 con bidoni di petrolio arrivati per la prima volta nell' isola dal Venezuela. La loro preparazione inizia a richiedere tempo, impegno e un procedimento standard di costruzione. Il lavoro del tuner (accordatore) consiste nel curvare la parte superiore del bidone con una sfera di acero, poi batterla con un punteruolo creando tante bolle quante sono le note musicali, infine accordandola con un martelletto, utensile simbolo del tuner. Le steel bands contano ben presto su sette diversi tipi di bidoni. Mentre i bassi hanno solo tre note differenti, i tenori, strumenti solisti delle orchestre, dispongono di ben trentadue note. Tra questi due estremi c'è tutta la tessitura timbrica dell'ensemble sinfonico e ciò permette alle steel band di abbondare in numerosi repertori musicali (funk, jazz, rock, disco... adirittura classica). Da allora le steelpan sono state costantemente perfezionate fino a diventare moderni strumenti professionali impiegati anche singolarmente in numerosi progetti. Una vera e propria evoluzione della cosiddetta "Pan-culture", uscita dai confini del folklore strettamente caraibico per abbracciare gli ambiti musicali più disparati in ogni angolo del pianeta. Da Robert Wyatt a Damon Albarn, dai Wildbirds & Peacedrums agli Hot Chip, dall'hip-hop all' elettronica, molti sono gli artisti che hanno colto le qualità espressive del pan in ambito alternativo e non, grazie anche al prezioso contributo di veri e propri guru dello strumento (uno su tutti il grande Fimber Bravo, storico membro della 20th Century Steel Band) che tenedo fede al verbo della reinvenzione globale e alla mistura come opzione primaria, hanno saputo reinventarsi senza timore misurandosi con la modernità.

Bahamian Ballads - The Songs of Andrè Toussaint (Naxos, 2002)

Originario di Haiti, Andrè Toussaint ma si trasferì negli anni '50 alle Bahamas, dove intraprese una carriera di cantante e intrattenitore che durerà fino alla sua scomparsa, nel 1981. Poi la musica: la caratteristica delle canzoni di Toussaint (bene evidenziata in questa raccolta) è la capacità di fondere con assoluta semplicità il calipso con tutta una serie di altre fonti sonore popolari. Potrebbe infatti fare un balzo sulla sedia chi distrattamente metta su il disco e si trovi a sentire "Granada", "C'est Si Bon" o addirittura "Gondolier" e "Piove" di Domenico Modugno (qui intitolata "Ciao Ciao Bambino"!!), ma l'inclusione in repertorio di brani messicani, afrocubani, francesi, americani, yiddish è resa naturale sia dalla necessità di intrattenere turisti di ogni parte del mondo, sia dalla bella personalità di Toussaint, la cui voce e la chitarra rendono con grande finezza le diverse anime di quelle fonti e le amalgamano in una piacevole creatura baciata dal sole e dagli spruzzi del mare. Dire che si tratta di un disco meraviglioso è poco, purtroppo però è difficile da trovare (poche informazioni anche in rete), ma se vi capita di incrociare il cd in una bancarella dell'usato non dovrebbe costarvi più del prezzo di un pacchetto di sigarette e sarebbe una bella botta di culo, quindi occhi aperti....

non basta esiste anche un box di tre cd della Trojan che si occupa delle faccende giamaicane del genere (brani dal 57 al '72) a cui andrebbe accoppiato anche ''Mento Madness: Motta's Jamaican Mento 1951-1956'' . Inutile aggiungere che a questa piccolissima discografia va aggiunta la ristampa 2009 del bellissimo ''Bahamian Songs'' di Blind Blake, disco di qui ci siamo già occupati, nel post Calypso appendix # 1.

A proposito di Calypso: vietato perdersi Blind Blake and the Royal Victoria Hotel Calypsos: ''Bahamian Songs'' (28 canzoni provenienti dalle lontane Bahamas e dai lontanissimi anni ‘50!), dischetto da incorniciare, da poco ristampato dalla Megaphone Music.
