Un murales è spuntalo di recente in una delle vie di Edimburgo. No, questa volta non si tratta del solito Banksy, bensì del commovente omaggio che qualche street artist ha voluto tributare a uno dei guru dell’ elettronica contemporanea, il geniale DJ e producer inglese Andrew Weatherall, scomparso a Londra il 17 Febbraio scorso a soli 56 anni a causa di un'embolia polmonare. Approcio ribelle, cresciuto con l'ossessione di Clash e Pil nella Londra post-punk dei primi anni Ottanta, nel 1987 il giovane Weatherall viene folgorato dall'arrivo dell'acid house e da una vacanza ad ibiza. Di lì a poco sarà chiamato a mettere i dischi in numerosi party, e come dj inizia a spiccare nelle serate dello Shoom con Terry Farley, assieme al quale fonda la seminale fanzine Boy's Own e condivide un paio di singoli (1990-91) a nome Bocca Juniors. Ispirato fin dall’inizio della sua carriera da un gusto musicale a dir poco eclettico e felicemente onnivoro, Weatherall mischia di tutto: dub, acid-house, punk, techno della prima ora, rock e funk con l’aggiunta di buone dosi di acidità ed estasi, frenesia e torpore. E' proprio in una di queste notti infuocate che si incrociano le strade (e i destini) del nostro con Bobby Gillespie dei Primal Scream. Il miracolo si compie definitivamente nel 1991 con la produzione di ''Screamadelica'' in cui la fusione tra nuove forme mutuate dall'house music e i classici stilemi rock tocca livelli di grazia ineguagliabili. Nel frattempo Weatherall diventa remixatore quotatissimo e ricercatissimo. Ora tutti lo vogliono: dagli Happy Mondays ai My Bloody Valentine (il suo remix di Soon è stato votato dai lettori NME come miglior remix di tutti i tempi) dai New Order ai James e ancora Primal Scream, Saint Etienne, Jah Wobble, S'Express, Galliano, Orb, Meat Beat Manifesto, Letfield, Bjork, Beth Orton... solo per citarne alcuni. La carriera come produttore 'autonomo', se escludiamo la breve parentesi nei sopra citati Bocca Juniors arriva subito dopo soprattutto con Sabres Of Paradisee Two Lone Swordsmen fino a progetti più recenti come The Asphodells o Woodleigh Research Facility oltre che a suo nome, naturalmente. E ancora tantissimi remix che caratterizzano un pò tutte le tappe della carriera artistica di Weatherall e ne valorizzano le capacità di magistrale assemblatore di suoni oltre a costituire l'ossatura portante della compilation quì presentata per celebrare la poetica di uno dei più grandi produttori contemporanei.
